Boston - Recommendations Needed!

The countdown is officially on.

In t-minus three weeks, the hubs, in-laws, and I are all taking off for a nice long Boston/Cape Cod vacay, and I can hardly contain myself. In fact, I am so excited thinking about the endless possibilities that I just might pee my turquoise cropped pants!

A big reason is because we will get to see my awesome sister-in-law and brother-in-law, and it's been to stinking long. Meredith and Kyle moved to Beantown this spring there and we can't wait for our largely anticipated reunion.

Have I ever told y'all that I hit the in-law jackpot?
Well, I totally did. Absolutely love 'em.

Anywho, this little blonde has never been to lovely, historical Boston (or the Cape!) and I am dying to see anything and everything! Mere and Kyle are awesome tour guides, but they're going to be at work during the daytime, so we'll need to keep ourselves occupied.

On my radar...

+ Flour Bakery + Cafe
+ Freedom Trail
+ Charles River Esplanade
+ Kane's Donuts
+ Harvard Yard
+ Sam Adams Brewery Tour
+ Kick Ass Cupcakes // Georgetown Cupcakes // Cakeology

And I wish we could catch a baseball game, but we're only going to be there a few days before we jet off to Cape Cod. My list is just too long

So, long story short... I need your help!

Restaurants? Shopping? Sights?
You name it - I want to see it all!

I'd love to hear your recommendations! And... GO!

  1. Oh gosh, my hometown area - and I just got back from the Cape yesterday.

    Boston:
drinks: at The Top of the Hub (for amazing views of the whole city), Eastern Standard (classy drinks and great food), Beacon Hill Pub (fun dive bar)

shopping: on the weekends hit up the SAWA market- it's in the South End, and it's all small vendors - great jewelry.

brunch: The Beehive for Jazz Brunch on Sunday- super fun.

Cape Cod: Depends on where you are heading - I stay in the lower cape.

Day trip to Martha's Vineyard- rent bikes and get around the whole island

Try to take in a Cape Cod league baseball game

If you go through Falmouth definitely a trip to TJ Maxx - it's the best one I've ever been to.

I might comment again - but you'll have a great time!

  2. I live in Boston and have a place on theCape so can give plenty of recommendations. Fenway tour is really fun, swan boats at the Public Gardens, Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill is so pretty to see, shop on Newbury Street, eat in the North End. . .

Kane's is in Saugus which is outside of Boston (just an FYI)!

Where on the Cape will you be? Then I can recommend restaurants and more!

  3. even if you cant make a game....sign up for the Fenwey Park tour...I love the city of Boston and seriously, that tour was the best one by far! We had a tour guide who slept, ate, breathed Red Sox and he made it so interesting! you get to go in the press box, on the field, next to the green monster, in the club boxes...seriously...worth it! There are also lots of good cafes to eat at over by Harvard.

  4. You've gotten a lot of good suggestions - I definitely second Eastern Standard and The Beehive for restaurants. And Top of the Hub for drinks (food is overpriced and underrated, I think, but as Jill said views from the bar are amazing!) There are a lot of really fantastic restaurants in the South End (where the Beehive is) - we love Tremont 647 and Stella (have seen various Wahlbergs there more than once - I think they are friends with the owner!)

You will definitely want to walk down Newbury Street for shopping (Sonsie and Piattini are my favorite restaurant that way), and for a longer (but not too long)walk, keep going down Boylston and stroll around Boston Common and the Public Gardens (where the Swan Boats and the Make Way For Ducklings statue are). If you like art, I LOVE the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum - its basically a gorgeous mediterranean style villa filled with all of her treasures from a life time of travel! The MFA is lovely too. If you want to go to a brewery, I would probably recommend Harpoon over Sam Addams. SA is a little out of the way (although you can take the T and walk); Harpoon is on the waterfront (again, good views of the city) and they have a new beer and pretzel tasting room that I've heard is fun.

We have a place on the cape too (we're mid-cape) so as someone else said, let us know what town. I would second a day trip to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. MV is a shorter ride but Nantucket is my favorite - quaintest houses ever, and home to Cisco Brewery (which is also Triple 8 Vodka Distillery - you can sit out on their patio and sample both while listening to live music and nibbling on treats from the farm store down the road - its definitely my husband's happy place!)

Boston is a fantastic city - I'm from the midwest like you, but have lived here for 8 years now and couldn't love it more!

  6. The Freedom Trail is amazing because it takes you to all the hotspots, you see so much history, AND there's a mall right in the middle of it. Perfect. And it starts at a Dunkin Donuts. Go there first. :)

  7. Yay!!! Definitely check out the North End if you like Italian food. Fiore is a great restaurant to try there! Also I know you have two bakeries already, but if you're in the Notth End you've got to try Modern Pastry! The seaport district also has a whole little thing on Saturdays where you can walk around and check out different little booths with jewelry and crafts! And the Museum of Science is so much fun! Oh and if you have a chance, the walk along the Charles River is really beautiful .)

  8. Definitely do the Sam Adams tour - one of my guests is from Boston and he says its a good one.

  9. Hey Lady - So exciting! I'll try to keep this short and not too repetitive with what everyone else is saying!

    Boston:
    1. There are a lot of boat tours/duck tours, etc. They're wonderful so I definitely recommend checking them out. I know Harpoon has been said before too - but it is worth your 5 dollars. :) This site usually has deals - http://www.goldstar.com/boston/events?date=on&from_date=2013-08-23&to_date=2013-08-27&page=3

    2. Someone else mentioned the North End - this is a must for sure! You cannot go wrong (also definitely skip the line at Mike's Pastry and go to Modern - it is worth it!).

    3. If you love seafood I would recommend the Daily Catch. They also have a location right on the water.

    4. I have some friends that visited and loved visiting the Maparium http://www.marybakereddylibrary.org/exhibits/mapparium and the Boston Public Library (near Coply) is gorgeous!

    5. Harvard Square/Yard is also a fun area to Walk around.

    Cape Cod

Chatam is such a cute town and definitely worth checking out. Also P-Town is a great place to play!

If you're near Brewster the Brewster Inn and Chowder house has never disappointed us (the restaurant is in a old house so don't let that throw you off :)). It is also connected to a bar - The Woodshed (which is appropriately named) that generally has live music.

Also Truro Vineyards has lovely tours/wine tastings.

    Have a lovely trip!

  10. You need to hit up Mike's in Little Italy. AMAZING pastries, amazing!

Do the freedom walk, it was a fun historic tour, but bring comfy shoes.

  11. MUST hit Newbury street for some shopping (Hello, Nordstrom Rack) in Boston and MUST hit up the North End (Hanover Street). Seriously every single restaurant on this street is the best Italian food you've ever had. I personally recommend a hidden treasure: Giacomo's. However, depending on the time of day, you'll wait in line outside. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! And Mike's Pastry is a fun touristy spot...just to add some more goodies to your list.

And MUST do a day trip to Martha's Vineyard while on the cape. Be sure to rent some scooters. ;)
